In the past, pioneers lived in this region because of the abundance of wildlife, and there were footpaths to help the hunters travel through this region. Researchers know that William Ogle was one of the first permanent settlers in this region, but he died quickly from malaria. More settlers also traveled to this region, and by the 1850s, there was a general store and post office that was owned by Richard Gatlin.
By the 1880s, more people wanted to live in the area because there was a railway line to transport lumber, leading to numerous jobs. During the 1900s, the community began to focus on local artists, and a school was established that still exists today.
